Advanced Italian Practice in Context I|

This course is designed for students who have completed at least two years of college-level Italian or who have achieved equivalent competency through study in Italy. Our primary objective is to enhance students' speaking abilities and Italian cultural literacy through exposure to a variety of Italian texts and contexts. The course will be organized both thematically and chronologically, taking into consideration a group of three themes that could change from one year to the next. Some groups or themes that might organize the course include the following groupings: l'amore, la morte, e l'altro; la cittą, la campagna, i sogni; il passato, il presente, e il futuro. We examine these themes in literary texts, paying attention to the different genres, and in opera and film. Students are expected to participate actively in this seminar setting. Class is conducted entirely in Italian.

|Examination and Assignments: |
1. Weekly essays (at least 2 pages), to be handed on Mondays. The essay will be graded for both grammar and content or complexity.
2. Weekly screenings on Mondays at 7:00
3. Weekly esercitazioni with the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) at a time to be determined during the first week of class. 4. The final presentation (25 minutes) will focus on a free topic to be chosen with the instructor's advice.

Please note: this course is intended for students who have either completed Italian 112 or placed beyond it. It is not designed for students who have already studied in Italy, though some exceptions will be made. Contact the instructor in the event of questions concerning the appropriateness of enrollment.
Students will meet with the Course Assistant/Foreign Lang. TA once weekly for 50 minutes. This schedule will be devised the first week of class.
Students will be expected to participate actively in class; quality participation will count for 30% of the final grade. They will also be expected to attend various extra sessions (screenings, esercitazioni, conversation hours) that are designed to maximize their exposure to spoken Italian.
