The longing for nationhood antedates the actual foundation of the modern Italian state (1860), and the various political, historical, and cultural expressions of the desires for statehood are the subject of this class. Taught in Italian and intended for Italian studies majors and other qualified students, the following authors and subjects will be studied: Ugo Foscolo; Italian Romanticism; I Promessi Sposi; Giacomo Leopardi; the Risorgimentalisti Garibaldi, Mazzini, and Cavour; Giovanni Verga; operas of Guiseppe Verdi; and other materials. |
