The primary goal of this course is to enable students to acquire Japanese language proficiency through integrating four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Lessons will cover such topics as Japanese convenience stores, history, traditional craftsmanship, and nature. The class meets three hours per week.

|Examination and Assignments: |
There are frequent homework assignments, which include grammar, Kanji and vocabulary exercises, reading comprehension, essay writing and conversation project. Both lesson tests and final examinations are given, and weekly quizzes.

Attendance and active participation in every class and weekly TA session are required.
Students who have not taken JAPN217 at Wesleyan are required to take a placement test.
