This course will explore changing and constant factors shaping the nature of rural life over a 1,500-year period. It will consider how people related to the landscape by looking at village life, agriculture, small industry like pottery making, religion, and the landscape itself. Students will approach the material record as it has been revealed by excavation over the last 25 years at such sites as Brebieres, Wharram Percy, and Rougiers. Emphasis will be placed on new critical approaches to the landscape, from the techniques of dendrochronology, pollen analysis, and landsat reconnaissance to the new theoretical structures provided by spatial analysis and cultural geography. |
