This seminar will examine the subterranean and often subversive mystical teachings within the Jewish tradition. The course will include an appraisal of the origins of Jewish mysticism in the texts of ascent from Late Antiquity; the effloresence of the Kabbalah in the Medieval Spain; the popularization of mysticism within 18th century Hasidism; and some of the revivals of the mystical tradition on contemporary Israel and North America. |
