This course is a reading of Dostoevsky's major works in the context of 19th-century Russian cultural and social history.
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation
Emphasis in lecture, discussions, and papers is on interpretation of literary texts. Students are to acquire knowledge and understanding of 19th-c. Russian Russian cultural and historical background.

Four to five one-page papers which prepare discussion questions; a mid-term and two longer papers.

Literature in translation. Critical articles available on reserve will be required reading. Even if you are not pre-enrolled in this class, come to the first class and the instructor will sign your add slip. There is no need to talk to the instructor in advance; all students will be admitted. Attendance and participation are required. All papers must be submitted in hard copy.
