This course focuses on the institutionalized production of masculinity and femininity as relevant social identities. Topics to be considered include the acqusition of gender in early life; the workplace as a site of gender differentiation; cultural representations of gender and sexuality; the racialized character of gender identities. Emphasis will be placed on various theories that have been advanced to explain sexual differentiation and male dominance. |
