Selected Topics in Social Theory

SOC 312
Spring 2008 not offered
Course Cluster: Service-Learning

The course begins with and examines Audre Lorde's claim that "we have no patterns for relating across our human differences as equals." Various models of leadership for creating such patterns and for building community will be studied. Different kinds of decision making and community action will be examined for their suitability for solving social problems. The course will pursue and explore examples of individual and communal leadership, especially those that initially were not recognized by the mainstream but went on to effect significant changes locally, socially and/or globally. Most important, students will examine, evaluate, and propose their own ideas, plans, and activities for socially responsible and politically effective leadership.
