Solo Performance
THEA 286
Spring 2009
Section: 01

This acting course introduces students to the work of solo performers that include Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Dario Fo, Anna Deveare Smith, Franca Rame, Roger Guenevere Smith, Lily Tomlin, John Leguizamo, Bill Irwin, Whoopi Goldberg, and others. Using the writing and performance techniques of these artists as a model, students will have the opportunity to write and/or perform a solo piece of their own based on a subject of his/her own choice. Students might choose to create a solo piece that brings to life a single character from history, fiction, or current events (Huey P. Newton, Walt Whitman, Mary Todd Lincoln, Frida Kahlo, etc). Alternatively, they might create a solo piece based on a theme, a work of fiction, or an event (Prison Narratives, Dante's Inferno, Hurricane Katrina, etc.) Students can also choose to perform solo pieces that are already written (Samuel Beckett's "Happy Days", Doug Wright's "I Am My Own Wife",! Laurie Anderson's "United States", Tony Kushner's "Homebody/Kabul", etc.). The course is limited to students who have already taken an acting course.
