Students in the course will learn about the topic of qualitative research methods through the process of designing and conducting an interview study. Students will work together in small groups and be introduced to other methods of collecting qualitative data throughout the term, but the focus of this course is on semi-structured interviewing. Throughout the course we will discuss the theoretical paradigms and tensions regarding the role of qualitative methods in the field of psychology.

Conduct at least two interviews, write process notes after each interview, transcribe at least 10 pages of your interview, and turn in a weekly discussion question.

You will learn about the topic of qualitative methods through the process of designing and conducting an interview study. I encourage you to work in small groups but will allow individual projects. Although you will be introduced to other methods of collecting qualitative data, the emphasis of this course is on semi-structured interviewing. Throughout the course we will discuss the theoretical paradigms and tensions regarding the role of qualitative methods in the field of psychology. As you conduct interviews, you will consider your own place within the process and engage with the questions this raises about the values of objectivity and subjectivity. As you analyze data, you will consider why your participants tell you the stories they do and how you justify your interpretation of these stories. Course reading will include both pragmatic guides to conducting interview studies as well as theoretical discussions of the values and philosophies that underlie different research paradigms.
