Advanced Fiction Workshop

A course in short or shortish fiction for people who have already had an introduction to fictional technique, and preferably an additional course in creative writing. Students will generate their own writing projects, so self-starters and go-getters only need apply. Readings will be tailored to the interests of the class. Heavy workshop component: students will make copies of their own work and distribute them to the class at least a week in advance of its being discussed. |

Major Readings:
Stories by a panoply of authors, including Langston Hughes, Alice Munro, Donald Marthelme, Lydia Davis, Linh Dinh, Anton Chekhov, Don DeLillo, Lynne Tillman, Gloria Naylor.

Examinations and Assignments: Three to five short stories, amounting to somewhere between forty and fifty pages (10,000 and 12,500 words); portfolio of revised work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Students must have taken one fiction course or one non-fiction course at Wesleyan. No later than a week before the first class, email the instructor a five-page sample of your fiction as well as your name, year, major, and how you fulfilled the requirement. You may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. Students will add this class during the Drop/Add period. |
