In close reading of selected poems by British and American writers, we will attend to mimesis and meanings; to relations of form, style, and content; and to aesthetics, historical moment, and current appeal. Ballads, sonnets, songs, lyrics, odes, and dramatic monologues by poets from Chaucer's time to ours, including Shakespeare, Marvell, Donne, Anne Bradstreet, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Browning, Dickinson, Eliot, Yeats, Williams, Frost, Plath, Bishop, and Clifton.
