This course examines choreography and its performance as an embodied experience. Students will research a theme-specific topic and participate in the creation of a contemporary work under the direction, guidance, and mentorship of a faculty choreographer. The class will serve as a laboratory for experimenting with the performance techniques and evolving methodologies of the teaching artist, preparing the student for the practice of embodied research. The work will use video projections. The course culminates in the performance of the work developed during the semester of study.

Mandatory attendance, classroom participation and being available for all performances.
Short bi-weekly Creative Compilations/Reflections (1-2 pages) and End of Semester Paper (8 pages). No final exam.

The course is a combination of studio and lecture. Although the majority of the course will consist of learning and performing choreographic material, it also includes critical discussions of scholarly writing, watching and analyzing choreographic sequences on film, and participating in guest master-classes. A hybrid course focusing on studio & lecture components with an emphasis on subject areas including Dance, Anthropology, American Studies, African-American Studies, Theater, Creative Writing, History, and Music.
Students will engage in and embody conversations connected to the legacy and current state of immigration in America. They will partake in practices of ancestral studies, autobiographical performance art, and cultivate collective performative ritual. They will dig into the work through multiple choreographic lenses in order to question and analyze ways in which to create provocative Socially Conscious Choreography. Students will engage with, from multiple learning perspectives, multiple cultural practices, values, and traditions and will be able to articulate a synthesized understanding of trends, structures, and components that are common to all. This course will count towards the dance major's "Research Methods / methodology" component.
Previous dance experience is not necessary.
