Junior Colloquium: Theory and Methods in African American Studies

In this course, we will develop an appreciation for the practice of interdisciplinary work in the field of African American studies by studying three moments in African American history and culture--19th-century American slaver, the Gilded Age of the 1890s, and the New Negro Renaissance of the 1920s. In each case, we will look at and compare how historians, writers of fiction, sociologists, political scientists, and other intellectuals represent the particular historical moment in question. By examining books emerging from different disciplinary approaches, we will be able to generate a more comprehensive context for understanding the political, cultural, and social developments of these three moments. |
