This seminar-style course will focus on the reading and constructive discussion of poetry submitted by members of the workshop. It will also include an ongoing discussion of contemporary poetry and poetics. We will explore an extensive reading list of contemporary writing for purposes of discussion, and students will write a few short responses. A final portfolio--consisting of 15 pages of revised poetry and a statement of poetics--is due at the end of the semester. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will write short response papers to several contemporary poetry collections and will explore an extensive reading list of contemporary writing for purposes of discussion. A final portfolio--consisting of 15 pages of revised poetry and a statement of poetics--is due at the end of the semester
Four brief prose response papers; weekly poetry submissions; constructive oral critiques; and a 10-15 page collection of poetry. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Students apply to the professor for admission to this course. Please submit 5-7 pages of poetry and a biographical information sheet including your name, email address, year in school, major, a brief list of favorite writers and other influences, and a brief account of your interest in poetry. This year there will be 2 deadlines for submission of materials, one during spring pre-registration and the other in August. If you are applying for the course in August, please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to ewillis@wesleyan.edu no later than 5 pm on Friday, Aug. 29. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text-format. If you are unsure what software you are using, please paste your materials into the text of an email as well. By Tuesday, Sept. 2, you will be notified electronically whether or not you have been admitted to the course, and a revised class list will be posted outside the English Department office, 294 High Street, Room 204. |
