Contemporary U.S. Poetry

What exactly is American about American poetry? In this course, we will discuss the work of many contemporary poets in the context of their relation to literary tradition, innovation, and American culture. Primary consideration will be given to the relation between written and spoken texts, form and content, lyricism and politics. We will also look at foundational poems by 19th-century and early 20th-century poets. |

Essential Capabilities:
Writing
Writing: students will complete regular writing assignments.
Interpretation: this skill will be exercised in every class session as we formulate and consider multiple interpretations of the texts we read.

Examinations and Assignments:
A midterm essay of 5-7 pages, a final essay of 8-10 pages, several 1-page assignments. |

Students must make every effort to attend several events outside of the regular class schedule.
This course contributes to the Theory & Literary Forms and American Literature concentrations and counts as a genre-focused course in the Creative Writing concentration of the English major. |
