An Invitation to Mathematics

This course is intended for students who enjoy both mathematics and reading. The student will be introduced to a sampling of mathematical ideas and techniques, from such areas as number theory, logic, probability, statistics, and game theory. The class will move back and forth between between lectures/problem sets and reading/discussion. Readings will include print media and mathematical blogs, survey articles for the mathematically literate public, and fiction about mathematics and mathematicians.

Essential Capabilities: Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning
Students will explore mathematical abstraction using concrete examples.
