This course will examine current issues on the self from both personality and social psychological perspectives. We will discuss how particular conceptions of the self affect cognition and motivation. Examples of topics to be covered are development of the self, culture and the self, self-evaluation maintenance, self-presentation, self-discrepancy, and self-verification. |

Essential Capabilities:
Speaking
Students will learn how to review and discuss the merits of research findings on the "self" and their motivational and behavioral implications. Students will have an opportunity to practice their speaking skills by giving oral presentations and leading class discussions.

There is no assigned textbook for this course. Instead, we will be reading mainly book chapters and contemporary journal articles.

Evaluation will be based on participation in class discussions, class presentations, short thought papers, and a major term paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
To be considered for this class, students should have taken either PSYC105 or PSYC101 AND either PSYC263 or PSYC260. |
