Course Cluster: Urban Studies |
This course provides a panoramic exploration of cultural and cinematic constructions of femininity in Spanish film of the 20th century. The course starts with cinema of the early part of the century, looks at films from before the Civil War (1936-1939) and during the Franco era (1939-1975), and concludes with a close examination of films of the post-Franco period. Special attention will be given to the social roles assigned to women by partiarchal society and the manner in which those roles are represented in film, the use of cinema stars as vehicles of mystification and idealization, and the new agency and visibility that women achieve for themselves both as social subjects and, more particularly, as filmmakers in the 1980s and '90s. Finally, the course seeks to bridge Spanish cultural perspectives and feminist film theories. |
