India and Indians were central to the rise and demise of Britain's global empire. Britain and Britons were central to the emergence and final shape of the Indian nation-state. This course will introduce students to history of empire in India and Britain. Themes to be investigated include East India Company trade, military entrepreneurship, imperial ideology, religious reform, subaltern insurgency, Nationalism, civil service, communalism, and disease. |

Each week will consist of a contextual lecture by the instructor and a student-led examination and discussion of an arena, event, image, or personality form multiple perspectives, from both Britain and India. |
