As Haiti and Louisiana became politically independent from France in the early 19th century, Franco-Caribbean literature emerged as resolutely ambivalent toward the (former) motherland. In particular, we will explore the ways in which Francophone Caribbean authors remained loyal to France yet began to criticize its (post) colonial policies. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is intended for students who have completed a French course numbered 215 or higher or have placed out of FREN 215 through the placement test this fall. Students will be asked to participate actively and give a short oral presentation. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
Only COL majors will be allowed to take this course on a credit/unsatisfactory basis. All others must take this course for a letter grade. Class attendance and active participation are essential to pass this course.
