BIOL 192
Spring 2011
Section: 01   02   03   04   05
Crosslisting: MB&B 192

This laboratory course, designed to be taken concurrently with BIOL182 or MB&B182, will introduce students to experimental design, laboratory methods, data analysis, and empirical approaches to developmental biology, physiology, ecology, and evolution. Laboratory exercises use the techniques of electrophysiology, microscopy, computer simulations, and analyses of DNA sequence data. Some exercises will include exploration of physiological processes in living animals. The lab course is a chance to learn these key techniques first hand and to work independently. It is graded on a Credit/ Unsatisfactory basis for all students. To receive credit for the course, students must complete each lab exercise and written assignment at a satisfactory level.

Essential Capabilities: Designing, Creating, and Realizing, Quantitative Reasoning
Several of the laboratory sessions offer students the opportunity to create novel experiments and bioinformatic analyses to address original hypotheses designed by the students. Analysis of experiments will require statistical analysis.
