Writing the Body in 20th Century French Literature
FREN 298
Fall 2006 not offered
|
Recently writers in France have explored the body in shocking ways in reaction to its standardized and clinical representation in advertisements, magazines and movies. The controversial debate these new novels have stirred recalls the old question of transgression and morality in art.
The literature of the XXth century, from Marcel Proust to Marguerite Duras, developed an alternative approach to the representation of the body that was not premised on morality and transgression. We will investigate this alternative approach through a study of the various roles the body can play in novels from different periods of the XXth century. |
