Improvisation Techniques in South Indian Music

Course Cluster: Southern Asia Studies

This course will introduce advanced students of Karnatak vocal music to raga alapana and svara kalpana, the most important forms of melodic improvisation. Students will begin by learning pre-composed examples of these forms. As they become comfortable with idiom, they will progress to designing their own improvisations.
