Wesleyan has recently acquired properties that contain mid-19th-century archaeological deposits that reflect the lives of two particular segments of the town's population: a semiplanned African American community (in the area defined by Vine, Cross, and Knowles streets) and the Connecticut Industrial School for Girls (which later became Long Lane School). The first half of this semester will be spent in the classroom studying the method and theory of historic (European-period) archaeology and in the lab examining comparative materials recovered from earlier excavations in Middletown. During the second half of the semester, students will learn excavation techniques through actual field experience at one of the two sites.
