Crosslisting: SISP 293

This seminar is a Women's Studies gateway course and will consider medical and scientific approaches to the study of sexuality over the past 100 years. We will focus on critical reading of primary sources including Krafft-Ebbing Psychopathia sexualis, the Kinsey Reports, and Sex in America. Key themes will include: how conceptions of gender inform and are constructed by the investigative framework and the interpretation of results, the consequences of the impulses to "medicalize" and "normalize" sexual behavior, the effects of quantification, and the tensions between "scientific studies" and "pornography."
