Economics of Transition
ECON 365
Fall 2006 not offered

The transition of the formerly centrally planned and bureaucratically managed economies of the now-defunct Soviet bloc to market economies based on private property and individual initiative is an event unparalleled in history. The course analyzes the underlying economic issues of transition drawing on the fifteen-year experiences of the European countries and the progress to date in the countries of the former Soviet Union. The rapid twenty-year economic development of China is treated as a special case of transition to a market-oriented economy.
