Memory and Identity in Contemporary Chinese Fiction and Film

The course will offer an overview of major fiction writers and film directors in contemporary PRC, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The genres of Chinese film that it will examine include Hong Kong action film, 5th-generation mainland cinema, and Taiwanese urban dramas. We will look at these literary and visual texts in light of a number of topics such as violence, fantasy and the martial-arts genre, traumatic memory and aesthetic representation of cultural and political upheaval, and the issue of gender, sexuality, and identity in the age of globalization. |
Essential Capabilities:
Intercultural Literacy, Interpretation This course will introduce students to major works of contemporary Chinese fiction and film. Through study of these works, we will think critically about broader issues such as identity and gender.

Course packet including short stories and novellas by Mo Yan, Yu Hua, Shi Tiesheng, Wang Shuo, Zhu Tian-wen and others.

Examinations and Assignments: In-class presentations, short response papers, midterm paper and a final paper. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: All readings will be in English. All films are screened with English subtitles. No prerequisite knowledge of Chinese language or culture is required. |
