This course will examine the history and development of what is called southern American literature. We will begin with fiction from the early 19th century and move through the 1960s. There are many reasons why southern writing has its own history, and this has to do primarily with slavery, the Civil War, and the attendant economic, social, and political ramifications attending this landscape. Writers from the South constitute some of the most important writers in American literature. We will examine why their regional identification is fundamental in approaching their work. |
