This course offers an applied approaches to statistics used in the biological, environmental, and earth sciences. Statistics will be taught from a geometric perspective so that students can more easily understand the derivations of formulae. We will learn about deduction and hypothesis testing. We will also learn about the assumptions that methods make and how violations affect applied outcomes. There will be an emphasis on analysis of data, and there will be many problem sets to solve to help students become fluent with the methods. The course will focus upon data and methods for continuous variables. In addition to basic statistics, we will cover regression, ANOVA, and contingency tables. |

Essential Capabilities:
Quantitative Reasoning
This course teaches statistics and linear modeling. We use environmental data and the students learn the bases, algebraic and geometric, for statistical equations to test hypotheses about environmental data. Emphases are placed on the students knowing the assumptions and limitations of all methods.

Three 1-hr exams plus a comprehensive final.
Weekly graded problem sets corresponding to the methods taught each week. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Graduate students will have to prepare a project paper in which they take a set of real data and analyze them in order to test hypotheses. |
