This course takes its subtitle from a phrase in Gloria Anzaldúa's now foundational text BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA (1984), in which the U.S.-Mexico border serves as a metaphor for the boundaries between human beings. Calling attention to race, class, gender, and sexuality, and to the material nature of the experience of oppression and marginalization, Chicana Lesbian writers have helped transform not only Chicano studies but also American studies and Women's studies. Drawing on the work of Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, and Carla Trujillo, among many others, we will examine critically the ways in which Chicana lesbian writers challenge dominant notions of Amerca, Chicano, woman, man, love, work, and family and, in the process, reconfigure and reinvigorate literary and social history. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
In this course students will practice their interpretation skills through the consideration and analysis of literary texts, in particular in relationship to their historical and political contexts. Thus, the students will develop their ablities to perform (in discussion and writing) literary interpretation. The students will also be asked to do weekly informal, analytical, critical writing, as well as one longer essay. They will have some opportunity for peer review of their written work and will receive individual feedback from the professor. This course meets the Literature of Difference requirement for the English major. |
