The Grotesque
ENGL 159
Spring 2009

Disparaged by rationalists, realists, and Victorians, the grotesque has nonetheless become one of the major styles of the last half century. This class will pair readings in the grotesque tradition with creative writing projects. We'll consider the place of the grotesque in writing from Ovid to the present: how it works, and the uses (political, satiric, comic, etc.) to which it can be put.
