This course serves as an introductory survey of the modern history of the philosophy of aesthetics and its influence on English and American literary theory. |

Major Readings:
We will read major works in the philosophy of aesthetics or selections from such works, including texts by Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Nietzsche, Bergson, Dewey, Adorno, Marcuse, Barthes, and Butler. In addition, we will read works of literature or literary theory that reflect the influence of those texts or demonstrate similar ideas, including works by Coleridge, Wordsworth, Pater, Arnold, Wilde, Forster, T. S. Eliot, Hulme, Wallace Stevens, and Toni Morrison.

Examinations and Assignments:
Several short response papers (3-4 pp) and a longer essay (10-15 pp) due at the end of the semester. Participation in an on-line discussion board is also required. |
