This course introduces students to Asian American literature and criticism by situating literature, art, and film in historical and regional context and in relation to key conceptual debates. The 1960s institutionalization of Asian American studies opened the door for the examination of a wide range of works and histories identified as Asian American, and these studies have been complemented by waves of conceptual frameworks aimed at delineating the cultural, political, and social stakes of the field. We will focus on transnational migrations as a common thread throughout the works, querying how various modes of mobility at both local and global levels take shape in literature and underpin how we think about the relationship between Asia and Asian America. We will revisit points of well-known Asian-American contact while illuminating others that have been less studied, including coolie labor in Cuba and Jamaica and Vietnamese asylum in Israel. |
