Signal Transduction
MB&B 237
Spring 2010
Section: 01
Crosslisting: BIOL 237

Cells contain elaborate systems for sensing their environment and for communicating with neighbors across the membrane barrier. This class will explore molecular aspects of signal transduction in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Topics will include membrane receptors, GPCRs, kinases, phosphorylation, ubiquitination, calcium signaling, nuclear receptors, quorum sensing, and human sensory systems. We will integrate biochemical functional approaches with structural and biophysical techniques.

Essential Capabilities: Interpretation, Logical Reasoning
The propagation of signals through cells involves the integration of multiple stimuli into a desired phenotypic outcome. By analyzing experiments aimed at understanding this process, students will learn how scientific data are evaluated critically to form testable models and how multiple competing models are weighed against each other. This process involves both interpretation and scrutiny of the results as well as logical tools for developing models consistent with the available data.
