Dedicated to the artistic works of the Brazilian post-dictatorship generation, the course takes as its point of departure a close reading of the modernist Oswald de Andrade's "Cannibalist Manifesto" (1928) and the writings of artists working during the dictatorship years. As the semester progresses, the course will examine post-dictatorship works in literature, the fine arts, dance, and theatre. Students will have access to examples in the form of texts in translation, images, and performance recordings. Discussions will focus on the relationship between Brazil's post-colonial condition and political history, including the country's current artistic production and sense of national identity. |
