History, Theory, and Practice of Indonesian Music and Theater
MUSC 115
Spring 2012 not offered

This lecture/discussion course introduces students to the historical and cultural context of the traditional music and theater of Indonesia, while playing the gamelan gives them the hands-on experience of performing the orchestral music of central Java (MUSC462). A principal theme of the lectures will be the differing ways in which historical developments, including colonization and modernization, have manifested themselves in the neighboring and related cultures of Java and Bali. Performing will promote cultural introspection and familiarize students with an orchestra consisting predominantly of tuned gongs and metallophones. No previous formal musical training is necessary.
