During his lifetime, the world-renowned African American playwright August Wilson graced stages with award-winning and -nominated plays from his "Pittsburgh Cycle." This course examines the 10 plays of this cycle in the order that the playwright wrote them, from JITNEY (1982) to RADIO GOLF (2005). We will pay special attention to the playwright's use of language, history, memory, art, and music within his oeuvre.

The following August Wilson plays will be accompanied by production reviews, interviews with the playwright, and select critical scholarship (mainly from THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO AUGUST WILSON, edited by Christopher Bigsby): JITNEY, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM, FENCES, JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, THE PIANO LESSON, TWO TRAINS RUNNING, SEVEN GUITARS, KING HEDLEY II, GEM OF THE OCEAN, and RADIO GOLF.

Assignments include: Short writing assignments (two response papers and one production review), one group presentation project, one individual presentation, intermittent mandatory discussion posts, and one final research essay.
