This demanding, reading- and writing-intensive course focuses on character, structure and plot, sentence structure, development of a strong and idiosyncratic voice, the role and history of the narrator, points of view, and writing with meaning. (This course previously carried the title Reading and Writing Fiction II.)

5 writing exercises and 1st, 2nd and 3rd drafts of a short story or novel chapter
During the first half of the semester, students read assigned short stories to discuss particular craft questions and answers. There will also be short writing assignments weekly, until spring break. In the second half, each student will produce a short story or the opening chapter of a novel, for workshop-style discussion (requiring editorial skill from each student and a written critique of the other students' work), using every element discussed in class. There are no other papers or exams.

1) Permission of instructor required
2) Submit a POI request through the pre-registration system.

4) Requirement: student must have completed at least one previous course in fiction or poetry or playwriting.
