This seminar will focus on three of the key themes in Chinese Buddhist philosophy: interdependence, universal Buddha nature, and emptiness. On each theme, we will read classic scriptual materials, philosophical discussions by Chinese Buddhist thinkers from the 7th-12th centuries, contemporary secondary scholarship, and--in some cases--critical reactions by contemporary Buddhists. Our goals will be both to understand the Buddhist doctrines and to critically evaluate them as philosophy. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
No Chinese language or background in Buddhist traditions is required. However, students without some demonstrable coursework in Buddhist traditions will be required to participate in a half-day Buddhism Bootcamp, probably held on a Sunday (we will find a mutually convenient time for all). |
