Special Topics: Identity Fictions

In this class, we will read work by story writers, novelists, critics, and others taking up identity as a subject. Some of the things we will explore in our discussions are how it is known (given), held, used. Students will work on these ideas for creative projects. Along with primary texts, we will turn at times to letters, diaries, theory, and essays. |

Major Readings:
Readings will include authors such as Henry James, William S. Burroughs, Susan Sontag, Angela Carter, Kathy Acker, Jeanette Winterson, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick.

Examinations and Assignments:
Short critical and creative responses to each week's reading assignment; three presentations of work developed within the context of the class. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students must also be prepared to make the effort to attend a couple of events during the semester with visiting writers when applicable. (Q&A sessions at 4:15 on Wednesday afternoons; readings at 8:00 p.m.)

To apply to this course, submit 3-8 double-spaced pages of fiction or writing on an author of fiction. Include in an accompanying note a short biographical statement: your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers or artistic influences and the extent of your creative writing background. The application deadline is Friday, August 31, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to damartin@wesleyan.edu. Please use either Microsoft Word or rich-text format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically as to the status of your application.
