Legal Thinking
CSPL 230
Summer 2016
Section: 01

This course represents an orientation into the misunderstood study and practice of law. Readings and class discussions will focus primarily on "legal thinking." Successful students will grasp the specific and subtle skills that can make some attorneys beneficial contributors in government, businesses, charities, social campaigns, the boardroom and the court room.

The class will evaluate some of the sources, motivations, biases and problems contained in the law as well as conduct a foundational analysis of exactly what constitutes the "law." Students will truly learn to understand the nuances of statutory, rule-based law as well as our system of "case-based" common law, with deep dives into the strengths and weaknesses inherent in rule making and the law school fundamentals of case analysis, factual investigation and evidence.
