This course may be repeated for credit. |
Crosslisting:
THEA 291 |
Course Cluster and Certificates: African Studies, African Studies Minor |
This course introduces students to the richness of the French and Francophone dramatic repertories, on the one hand, and, on the other, invites them to discover acting techniques (such as movement, physicalization, memorization, mise en scène, and so forth). Students will thus put their language skills into motion, and the course will culminate in a public performance at the end of the semester. (Special accommodations will be made for students who do not wish to perform publicly). Taught exclusively in French, the course will place particular emphasis on the improvement of students' oral skills through pronunciation and diction exercises, all the while polishing their written expression and enhancing their aural comprehension. |

Major Readings:
The plays studied and performed will change each semester. Nonetheless, we will attempt to cover a range of places and times, including the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia, from the Middle Ages to today.
|
Examinations and Assignments: A reading report for each individual play studied and two short papers. The course will culminate in the performance of students' work at the end of the semester. Alternative arrangements will be made for students who do not wish to perform in public. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: The course will be divided intro two components: in the first 2/3 students will read, discuss, and analyze the selected plays; in the last 1/3, students will prepare the final performance. Students will be required to attend extra rehearsals, sometimes on weekends, especially toward the end of the semester. Students will be graded on their active class participation, their progress and artistic growth, their performance and scene study work, and on their writing assignments. While any student who has completed FREN 215 (with a minimum grade of B) or has placed out of FREN 215 through the placement test may sign up for this course, it is an introductory course intended for students who have just completed FREN 215 or not taken more than one course in French beyond 215 and not yet studied abroad in a French-speaking country. Readings, written assignments and class discussions will be in French. This course can be repeated for credit as the texts will change each semester. |
