The most valuable quality a writer can have is a singular perspective, a way of engaging with the world that is the writer's alone. Partly this perspective is shaped by narrative voice; partly it is shaped by choosing what to focus upon. We will use techniques from various creative fields to look at our surroundings afresh while simultaneously developing our composition skills to form these observances into literature.

Junot Diaz, John Berger, Annie Dillard, Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen and (towards the end of the semester) various authors chosen by the students themselves.
|Examination and Assignments: |
There will be a short creative writing assignment each week (350 words minimum) based on classwork. Students will also be expected to read a story-length assignment for each class. Towards the end of the semester, there will be a four-week project to encourage the beginning of a more substantial creative work.

This course contributes as a Special Topic to the Creative Writing concentration and to the Theory and Literary Forms concentration of the English major.
