Sound Systems and Chamber Electronics
MUSC 225
Spring 2023
Section: 01

A course in live electronic music centered on the transformation and spatial redistribution of sound. Coursework includes individually creating interpretations of fixed media work (by a composers such as Eliane Radigue, Luc Ferrari, Robert Ashley) for specific spaces using a sound system designed for that space and that piece. Collectively we will prepare realizations of ensemble pieces that played a pivotal role in the development of this music (such as John Cage's Cartridge Music and David Tudor's Rainforest IV). Term projects will take the form of concert music or sound installation or other hybrid forms.

On a technical level we will explore different generations of electronic
instruments and instrumentation drawn from Wesleyan's World Instrument Collection. This ranges from found objects such as slinky's and bird calls to Moog and Arp synthesizers and guitar pedals and other idiosyncratic synthesis devices. We will expand this vocabulary with digital sound techniques using SuperCollider 3, a free music programming environment that extends the DIY sensibility to software.
