Visualizing Sound: Music Videos
FILM 398
Spring 2024
Section: 01

Music videos are fascinating objects. They function in part as marketing assets (promoting albums and singles, for instance) and spaces of intense visualsonic experimentation within popular culture. While the language of cinema and the conventions of its production tend to foreground the visual, music videos are typically designed around a song. Accordingly, music videos can deploy elements of cinematic form, such as editing and mise en scene, to visualize the rhythms, timbres, and movements of music. In this class, we will think critically with and about music videos. The class will be organized around various artists (Tierra Whack, Queen Latifah, FKA Twigs, Flying Lotus, Shabazz Palaces) and directors. We will also watch a few films by directors who have worked across film and music video (Joseph Kahn's Detention, Melina Matsoukas's Queen and Slim). While digital music videos and Black studies structure the course, students will be encouraged to explore their own interests within the orbit of music video.
